Dr. Andrew Kerklaan, CEO of Sausalito-based topical cannabis maker Dr. Kerklaan Therapeutics, said states like Washington and Colorado have seen major growth in that market segment. From 2015 to 2016 sales of topical cannabis products increased by more than 80 percent, according to marijuana data provider BDS Analytics.
“Anybody in the industry wants to be in California with the size of the population and the market potential,” said Kerklaan, who launched his product line last month.
Kerklaan said his focus is on professionalizing the topical cannabis industry and creating higher quality, upscale products with branding and packaging that counteracts some of the stigma around medicinal cannabis.
“The branding is really about a serious clinical medical application. We know our typical customer, they’re over 55 and the biggest use case is chronic pain,” Kerklaan said.
